Dry roast the makhanas in a pan on low flame for 5–6 minutes until crisp. Crush half of them coarsely and keep the rest whole.

Boil milk in a heavy-bottomed pan and let it simmer on low flame until slightly reduced.

Add roasted makhanas (both whole and crushed) into the simmering milk. Cook for 10–12 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Add sugar and mix well until dissolved. Continue to cook until the kheer thickens to desired consistency.

Stir in cardamom powder, saffron strands, and chopped dry fruits. Mix well.

Serve hot or chilled as a delicious vrat dessert.
